Islamabad, 12 October 2007: Pakistan Peoples Party has demanded of the
Election Commission of Pakistan to put the electoral lists on Website before
they are printed for scrutiny by political parties.
The demand was made at the end of meeting of the Election Monitoring Cell PPP
in Islamabad today.
Presided over by Senator Sardar Latif Khosa, Coordinator PPP Election Cell the
meeting was attended by Amir Fida Piracha, Palwasha Behram and Mansoor Sheikh.
The meeting decided that Senator Sardar Latif Khosa would raise the issue
before the Supreme Court to direct the Election Commission to place the on its
Website before they are printed.
It may be mentioned that the Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan Kanwar
Dilshad in an interview on a private television channel the other day has said
that the lists would be made public in about a week's time and new voters have
been enrolled after ensuring that all the duplicate votes had been deleted.
The PPP has said that the draft electoral rolls for 2007 parliamentary
elections were faulty as they had missed around 20 million voters as compared
to the electoral rolls prepared for the 2002 polls. The list was challenged by
the PPP Chairperson in the Supreme Court.
The ECP now has claimed that as directed by the Supreme Court, it has been
working on updating the electoral rolls. The PPP however has demanded that the
list be placed on the website so that the political parties could verify the
claims made by the Election Commission.
The Election Monitoring Cell, PPP also decided to coordinate with the party
organisations of all four provinces to ensure that all candidates conduct
door-to-door verification in their respective constituencies.
A report on the deliberation of the Committee was also sent to Mohtarma
Benazir Bhutto.
